A Kenyan competing in his first 10-kilometer road race and an American battling the flu and a 20-mile-an-hour wind won the featured running events Saturday in the inaugural Miami Winter Games.

Peter Koech, 28, broke away from a five-man pack with 150 meters left to win the invitational Orange Bowl 10K in 28 minutes 20 seconds at Winter Games Stadium in downtown Miami. Paul Davies-Hale of Britain was second in 28:22. American Craig Virgin, one of the prerace favorites, finished 10th in 28:48.

Koech, who now lives in Phoenix, favors 5,000-meter races. His last 10K race, in May 1985, was on a track. Despite his unfamiliarity with the course and distance, he stayed with a bunched-up pack of as many as 15 runners.

"I knew I was going to be strong," Koech said. "I decided to stay with them. At the beginning, I did not feel that good. I started to feel better as I went along."

The runners picked up an additional pair of feet at the two-thirds mark. An unidentified male jumped into the pack but did not last long after receiving a few pops to the head from the field.
